Historical Figures
Rev. Dr. Richard C. Keller, Sr.
On November 1939, Rev. Richard Keller was called to Beth Eden. This was during the depression and recession years. The church at that time had fewer than 100 members and was left with a $15,000 mortgage. Under the leadership of Rev. Keller, the following outreach programs were implemented:
Weekly radio broadcast
Adult typing and bookkeeping classes
Community nursery school
Dental office
Shuffleboard, movies, plays and roller skating for the youth
The City of Chicago sent nurses to the church to give free inoculations to babies and children.
The Morgan Park Credit Union had it's first office at Beth Eden.
On March 11, 1975, after 36 years of faithful service to Beth Eden and the community, Rev. Richard Keller was born into eternity. After his death Deacon Leroy Haynes asked the church to pay his widow a monthly pension. The request was granted.
Deacon Leroy Haynes
While Rev. Keller was pastor, the mortgage was paid, membership increased, and blue prints for the church expansion were completed. To provide collateral for the expansion of the church, Deacon Leroy Haynes mortgaged his home twice. Deacon Leroy Haynes was the chairman of the combined deacon and trustee boards. The Haynes Center is named after him because of his dedication, faithfulness and service to the church. After seven years, the $175,000 structure was made a reality and Beth Eden was referred to as "reborn."
