God Does Big Things with Small Deeds

by Max Lucado

"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin" (Zech. 4:10 NLT).

Begin. Just begin! What seems small to you might be huge to someone else. God does big things with small deeds.

Against a towering giant, a brook pebble seems futile. But God used it to topple Goliath. Compared to the tithes of the wealthy, a widow's coins seem puny. But Jesus used them to inspire us. And in contrast with sophisticated priests and powerful Roman rulers, a cross-suspended carpenter seemed nothing but a waste of life. Few Jewish leaders mourned his death. Only a handful of friends buried his body. The people turned their attention back to the temple. Why not?

What power does a buried rabbi have? We know the answer. Mustard-seed and leaven-lump power. Power to tear away death rags and push away death rocks. Power to change history. In the hands of God, small seeds grow into sheltering trees. Tiny leaven expands into nourishing loaves.

Small deeds can change the world. Sow the mustard seed. Bury the leaven lump. Make the call. Write the check. Organize the committee.

Moses had a staff. David had a sling. Samson had a jawbone. Rahab had a string. Mary had some ointment. Aaron had a rod. Dorcas had a needle. All were used by God. What do you have?

God inhabits the tiny seed, empowers the tiny deed. He cures the common life by giving no common life, by offering no common gifts. Don't discount the smallness of your deeds.

I love each of you.  I am honored to serve as your Pastor! …Pastor Jenkins

September 16, 2020

Dear Church Family,

I am so grateful to write you on today.  God has blessed each of us with health and strength.  As we experience today, and face the tomorrows of our lives, let us appreciate all that the Lord is doing.  The Lord is blessing us, right now.

For those of you who were able to come out and show support to the Norris and Persons families during their bereavement, thank you.  Sister Norris and Sister Persons served our congregation well.  Let us keep in our prayers the families of these individuals.

On this past Sunday, we had our first “production” of our worship service, which was shown on our Facebook page, our YouTube page, and on our website.  One of the things that we as a church have been able to do during this pandemic, is to invest in some media equipment so we would be able to continue effective ministry through the social media platforms.  I thank Brother Robert E. Wooten, Jr., for his skills in putting the production together.  If you have not seen the worship service, and you have access to the Internet, please go to our Facebook site (Beth Eden Baptist Church Chicago), and enjoy the service.

It is my prayer that we can share our phones or computers with those of our congregation who may not have access to this technology.  Also, our young people can be of great assistance to others, if time is taken to patiently show the “basics” to those who may not know how to use the media.  By doing so, you can help close the digital divide with those who may not know as much as you, regarding social media.  In an effort to keep you informed as a church, the following platforms are used to connect with you; Facebook, www.bethedenbaptistchurch.org, YouTube, Zoom, surveys, telephone worship, emails, and letters.

Thank you for remembering the importance of supporting our ministry with your tithes and offerings.  Through your giving we meet our obligations.  Thank you for your gifts.  Please continue to honor God with your giving by stopping by the church, through your banking institution, through GIVELIFY or ZELLE.  I thank God that you are honoring God through your giving.  I praise God for the work of the trustees, who are making sure that we meet all of our commitments.

On Saturday the 19th, the Deaconess Ministry will distribute Holy Communion packets from 10 A.M. - 2 P.M., in the parking lot of the church.

Do not forget Sunday’s worship beginning at 9:00 A.M.  The phone number is 1-712-775-7035 (code) 709315#.  It is important to know where the MUTE button is on your phone, and to use it during the worship.  Let us do our best to block out all outside noises as we worship together.  Let us demonstrate common courtesy, so we can enjoy worship. Again, please let us make the effort of silencing or muting our phone during worship.  Share this information to those who join us on the telephone for worship. Let us give our best, as we honor God in worship.  Let us continue our sensitivity to quality worship.

Let's keep our sick and shut-in, hospitalized, and bereaved in our prayers.

On Sunday afternoon, we celebrate the Usher’s Ministry of Beth Eden.  They are celebrating 96 years.  Under the leadership of Sister Jean Burns, our ushers continue to bless this congregation, even during this pandemic.   There will be a ZOOM anniversary celebration on Zoom, Sunday beginning at 1:45 P.M.  The ZOOM information to join is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83947395558?pwd=VEhyaDQ3ZXc2Ykx5bGlFWWhLL0kxUT09
