June 16, 2022

Dear Saints of God,

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.( https://www.history.com/news/what-is-juneteenth)

Juneteenth is to remind us of how our fore parents endured slavery to freedom. And to fully recognize the freedom for Blacks in this country after the Emancipation, came at a cost. For the freedoms we have, many sacrifices were made by those who prayed for their future generations, of the which, we are beneficiaries.

On last Sunday, the youth did an outstanding job in leading our worship service. As the fore parents prayed for the future generations, we are encouraged to do the same for this generation and the future generations.

Juneteenth reminds us that it “takes a village to raise a child.” God is truly blessing our congregation! I encourage all of us to support our ministries; spiritually and financially. God has great things in store for the Beth Eden Baptist Church.

Early voting has begun. It is ever so important to participate in this right to vote for those who seek to serve in governance in our local, state, and national arenas. If you have never voted before, start now, and continue to vote in the future elections. Clarence Page who is an editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune, wrote in his June 12th column, “People need to get out and vote.  Voter apathy is self-destructive. If you don’t vote, you don’t count. Or, at least, your choice isn’t counted—unless you make one.”

Sunday is Father’s Day. I congratulate all men who are more than biological fathers, who serve as role models for future generations to follow. In the society in which we live, there is a need for real men to take its place in the public. The need for moral and ethical leadership is paramount. The young men need guidance, and it is up to the elders in sharing the wealth of information that has been gained over the years. And if the men do it right, we will all come to know the Namibian proverb, “Leadership does not depend on age.”

For Men’s Day, Rev. Clarence McEwen will be the preacher for the hour.

Please continue doing a wonderful job of protecting yourselves during the pandemic.  Your wearing of masks, social distancing, and washing your hands, demonstrate the care that you have not just for yourself, but for others around you. Again, I say thank you.

On June 26th, we celebrate Women’s Day. The guest preach for that special day is Rev. Dr. Stephanie Buckhanon Crowder, professor at Chicago Theological Seminary. This woman of God will bless us, as God uses her for this extraordinary day in the life of Beth Eden.

A man took his 6-year-old daughter to his office on 'Take your kid to work day.' As
they walked around the office, the girl turned visibly upset and soon started crying. Her father asked her
what was wrong. As everyone gathered around, she sobbed "Daddy, I'm getting bored walking around the
office. Please show me those clowns you said you work with."

Love, ya,
